Should my child be in school with this illness?

Stomachache, Vomiting, Diarrhea

A child with vomiting and/or diarrhea should be kept home until symptoms have resolved for approximately 12 hours and the child is able to keep down food and liquid.

Pain

Ear Ache: Consult your doctor during office hours. Give Tylenol or Motrin to relieve pain. A child may attend school if the pain is not severe.

Toothache: Call your dentist.

Headache: Keep home if headaches are severe and do not respond to Tylenol or Motrin. Consult your doctor if headaches persist.

Cold, Sore Throat, Cough

If cold or cough symptoms are associated with a fever, call your doctor. Your child may attend school if there is no fever. A sore throat accompanied by a fever may indicate strep throat. Call your doctor and have your child evaluated. Strep throat must be treated with an antibiotic for 24 hours before returning to school.

Rash

If your child has an unusual rash, contact your doctor. Keep your child home from school until you have discussed the rash with your doctor.

Fever

Your child may attend school with a temperature less than 100. A child having a fever above 100 must not attend school until they have been fever-free for one full day.

Head Lice

Please call and report any case of head lice to the nurse's office. Treat your child's hair with medicated shampoo (sold at any drug store) and clean all linens, pillows, stuffed toys, etc. as explained in pamphlet accompanying shampoo. Your child must be checked by the nurse prior to returning to school. All nits (eggs) must be removed. For more info. check the RIDlice.com website.
