Brigantine Elementary School Media (Library) Center
Our school Media Center serves children in grades K-4. Teachers sign up for times to bring their children to the Media Center on a weekly basis. Also, classes come to use the Library for research. The Media center is the hub of the Elementary School. It enriches and supports the entire school curriculum. We try to foster a love for reading and also stress independent reading and encourage older children to choose books to read to other students.
Our collection has approximately 7,000 books, several children's magazines, newspapers, and an Audio-Visual collection for teachers to use in their classrooms. Participation in the Accelerated Reading Program (Reading Counts) is promoted to encourage children to read for enjoyment and comprehension.

In Kindergarten, the children learn the layout of the library. They become familiar with the parts of books and how to be responsible and to take care of the books and to return them on time.
In First Grade, the children are aware that Easy Fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by the authors' last names. By the end of Second Grade the students learn about the Dewey Decimal System of classification of Non-Fiction books and explore and learn about the Biography (Hero) Section. They're also encouraged to read fiction or chapter books.
By Third Grade, the children learn more about using a Card Catalog and broad categories and sub divisions of the Dewey Decimal System. Third Graders are introduced to research and reference skills. Fourth Graders expand their research and study skills. All children have the opportunities to use computers for internet skills and research.
The Elementary School Media Center is bright and cheerful and our students love to come to browse and select books. Mrs. Melissa Carber is the Media Specialist and Mrs. Sally Sooy is the library clerk.
