The “Kindness Is Contagious” program was initiated in 1996 as a component of the Brigantine Elementary School’s Character Education Program and Strategic Plan. Through this initiative, each child in the school performs and then records in individual logs acts of kindness done in school and at home.  The results have been a significant reduction in discipline and a very positive and respectful school climate, so important for learning to take place.  In 2001-2002 the Brigantine Elementary School was selected as one of ten New Jersey Star Schools.  This award was based on the school’s areas of specialization that include character education, technology, and art.

 

The Brigantine Elementary School has twice been recognized as the “Kindest School in New Jersey” and has received six consecutive Heart of Gold Awards from Mission: Kindness International, Inc.  The entire Community adopted the program and was named the “Kindest Place in New Jersey” in 1998.  Additionally, the City of Brigantine has received five consecutive Heart of Gold Awards.  The school has earned numerous other honors including: the “Pride in Who We Are Award” by the New Jersey Department of Education; A Joint Resolution by the New Jersey Legislature; the Congressional Award from Congressman Frank LoBiondo, who also entered the school’s program into the Congressional Record as a national model; and the Star School recognition previously mentioned.
