The Brigantine Board of Education policy allows the
administration of medication to pupils during school hours only when failure to take such medicine would jeopardize
the health of the pupil, or the pupil would be unable to attend school if the medicine were not made available
to the pupil during school hours. The State of New Jersey has very specific guidelines for the administration of
medication in school. Prescription (Rx) medications may be administered if the parent brings the medication in
its original pharmacy container and gives written (signed) permission for its administration including the reason
or purpose for its administration and possible side effects of the medication. MEDICATION IN SCHOOL PERMISSION
REQUEST FORMS are available from the school health office & may be printed from this web site; go to form.
Parents are to bring or pick up medications for school; children are not allowed to carry medication to & from school
except for emergencies medications which have
been approved for self-carry/administer (e.g., asthma / severe
life-threatening allergies), click on

self-carry/administer permission form. If your child's health care provider orders a Rx for your
child that requires administration during the school day, ask the pharmacist to give you a separate labeled container
for school. The medication needs a pharmacy label with the student's name, physician's name, & directions for
administration.
Over-the-counter medications, which have been ordered by a physician, require:
1. parent / guardian written, signed permission including
dosage and time(s) to administer.
2. reason for medicine to be administered.
3. that the medicine be in the original labeled container.
4. Medications that have been ordered to be given three (3) times a day do not need to be taken during the school
day. They should be taken before school, after school, & at bedtime.
A parent/guardian must come in and give any medicine
that has not been ordered by a physician.
The Brigantine Board of Education assumes no liability for the administration of medications.
