Dear Parents,

I’m so excited to say that the first quarter of the school year has been wonderful.  The children and I have gotten to know each other quite well and now that we are familiar with each other, the second quarter brings new and exciting additions to our Reading coursework. Scholastic Reading Counts!, the Author Card project, and the new Reading Resource website will surely inspire our reading lifestyle.

Scholastic Reading Counts! is a reading program we will be using for the remainder of this year.  This program motivates, encourages, and helps our students monitor what they read while reading independently.

Here’s how it works.

  1. Students select one book that interests them from hundreds of titles based in our library.
  2. Then they read this book at their own pace before the end of the second quarter.
  3. When the students have completed their reading, they take a quiz on the computer to verify their comprehension.
  4. If the students do poorly on this quiz, they may review the story and take it again at a later time. However, the quiz must be completed before Thursday, January 9, 2003. This will be the last day quizzes will be accepted.
  5. This quiz will count as ONE TEST GRADE for the second quarter.

Scholastic Reading Counts! program is one I’m sure the children will love.

Next the students will complete a Reading project, which will focus on a specific author.  This Author Card project is a fun project that will also count as ONE TEST GRADE.  I have discussed this with your child and given them a copy of the requirements.

Along with this, I want to invite you to visit my website at www.brigantine.atlnet.org.  It is created as a Reading resource for you and your child.  If you need to contact me, check homework assignments, find more information regarding reading projects, or just want to use it for reading fun, it is there for your convenience.

I look forward to another exciting and rewarding school quarter.

Fondly,

Mrs. Scannell
