What is prewriting?
Prewriting is the first step in the writing process. It helps the
writer choose a topic or, when a topic is already assigned, helps
the writer decide what they will say about the topic. It also gives
the writer a chance to organize his or her thoughts. The idea is to generate
as many ideas as possible, some of which will be eliminated during
the next step in the writing process.
How do I complete this step?
There are many activities you can use to help plan and organize your
writing. The type of prewriting you choose will depend on the writing
task you are given. Click on one of the following links to see examples
of different prewriting activities:

Tips for Prewriting
-
Get as many ideas down on paper as you can. You will get rid of any ideas that don't fit later.
-
If you are only given a small amount of time to complete a writing task, don't spend too much of it on prewriting. For example, if you are given forty minutes to complete a writing task, spend only about the first five minutes on prewriting.
-
Don't write in full sentences. Use one or two words to illustrate each idea.

Microsoft Word Connections
Microsoft Word can be used to create outlines, story maps, graphic organizers, etc. during prewriting. You can then print out your prewriting to help you with your rough draft, or keep it open in another window on your computer.Remember to save frequently when working in Microsoft Word so that you do not lose any of your work.
