What is the writing process?
The writing process is the name given to the five steps that authors work through when composing a written piece. The five stages are prewriting, rough draft, revising, editing, and publishing. Although the steps are frequently completed in order, you may move back and forth between the steps when completing a writing task.

When do I use the writing process?
The writing process is used every time you complete a piece of writing, even though you may not complete all five steps formally. For example, when answering an essay question on a test, you may not make a full diagram of what you're going to say, but you do spend a moment or two thinking about what you will say and how to say it. This can be considered your prewriting. It is important to remember that the writing process is meant to help you produce the best possible piece of writing in the time given. Generally, the more time you are given to complete a writing task, the more likely you are to use all five steps of the writing process.

How can word processing software help me with the writing process?
Word processing software such as Microsoft Word can greatly decrease the time you need to complete the writing process. After typing your rough draft, the revising and editing steps can be worked through more quickly since you have the ability to change only the parts of your writing that need work. This Web site will give you details about how to use Microsoft Word to help with the writing process during each step.
